Paracetamol

Is paracetamol the right treatment for pain relief?

How is management
determined?

Consider comorbidities, body weight, and joint injury history1

Key goals: relieve pain & help regain mobility, by tailoring a simple and effective management strategy encouraging medication adherence2

Individuals with OA, often older with comorbidities3-5

Concomitant medications need caution when selecting a pain medication, due to potential for drug-drug interactions (DDIs)6

Along with exercise, weight control (if appropriate) and non-drug approaches,
guidelines recommend paracetamol first for mild-to-moderate OA pain1,7-13

What is the suitability
profile of paracetamol?

Unlikely to harm liver, kidneys or stomach14-16

No evidence of liver damage* after 2 y of use15

Adverse kidney effects rare15-17 & is preferred pain medication for patients with kidney impairment17

No evidence of GI bleeding at regular doses16

*At recommended doses. †Shown to increase anticoagulant.

Suitable in
polypharmacy

Low DDI risk14†
