3 Step Algorithm

3-Step Algorithm to diagnose Osteoarthritis

Step 1

Assess OA

Ask customer about OA symptoms1,2

Identify symptoms or circumstances requiring referral3

If any red-flag symptoms present
(eg, recent trauma, significant changes in previously diagnosed OA, new-onset joint pain, rheumatoid arthritis symptoms),
refer immediately

Step 2

Identify treatment considerations

Identify any conditions or medications limiting treatment options, such as medications limiting treatment4,5 or medical conditions limiting treatment3

Identify what customer has used previously to treat OA

Step 3

Recommend treatment

Is there any preference for treatment based on what was used previously?

If yes, recommend non-pharmacological treatment and the customer’s preference, if possible, taking into consideration Step 26,7

If no, recommend non-pharmacological treatment and most appropriate pharmacological treatment (ie, topical NSAIDs, paracetamol 1000 mg (max 4 g/day))
